Khingz
As an avid follower of hip hop, I’ve observed numerous things. Some of these observations have irked me beyond imagination (the need for rappers to diss that generic phantom rapper in their verses – yea, admit it, you do it too), others I find intriguing (the recent transition back to the bright neon clothing styles of the 80’s by some). There are also some that leave me somewhat speechless. A prime example is the fixation of many hip hop artists on outer space. But I’m not here to write a thesis paper on it.
I’m here to introduce to you Khingz, formerly of the group Abyssinian Creole. Let me put it this way: dude is on some next level shit. Check his track “From Slave Ships to Spaceships” (title track off of his upcoming album). Khingz juxtaposes the concept of slave ships (a nod to the past) with the idea of spaceships (a look towards the future), and combines the two to provide an insightful look at where we are now, and in his own way tells us that we must acknowledge the brutalities past, overcome those hardships to work towards a better future, figuratively leaving the slave ship and boarding the spaceship. Trust me, this cut will make your jaw drop in amazement.

P.S. I know it may seem like I have a love affair with Seattle-area music, but I just can’t help it. There are just some great hip hop artists there, and I’ve actually been holding back on writing about them. Look out for more posts about my hometown heroes in New York hip hop as soon as I can get my hands on a certain someone’s album (I’m lookin’ at YOU, CAUSE).
